Picnic - March 3rd

We're having a pot luck picnic! Come join us in Delray Beach for an afternoon picnic out on the intercoastal. There are several BBQ grills, some nice places to sit and eat, a pool and a basketball net close by. We ask that everyone bring a little something (beer, soda, chips, salad, side dish, etc).

This is an official event for FLASH of North Palm Beach. It is our hope that holding the event in a more central location will encourage those in Ft. Lauderdale or Deerfield Beach to come join us. All FLASH members are welcome, as are other local atheists, and of course the families of those who wish to attend.

If you are interested in coming, please RSVP on the meetup.

Kokomo Key Lane
Delray Beach, FL 33483

Directions: Kokomo Key is on Federal Hwy. If you're coming from the north, take the Woolbright exit off 95. Turn left on Woolbright, right on Federal and Kokomo Key will be on your left, just past Ellie's 50's diner. If you're coming from the south, take the Atlantic Ave exit off of 95. Turn right on Atlantic, and left on Federal Hwy. Kokomo Key will be on your right, just past Sandie's diner. There is a gate, and a code will be sent to those who RSVP. Once inside the gate, simply drive as far into Kokomo Key as you can, the picnic will be at the end of the community, next to the intercoastal.

Sean Faircloth talk and formal meeting

FLASH of Palm Beach North is holding a formal meeting on March 1st, 2012 at 7pm at the Summit Boulevard Library. Sean Faircloth, Director of Strategy and Policy at the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Science and Reason, will be our speaker for the evening.

Faircloth served five terms in the Maine Legislature, including Judiciary and Appropriations Committees, and was elected Majority Whip by his colleagues. He has spearheaded 30+ laws, at least one of which (the dead-beat dad law) was later incorporated into federal law.

As Executive Director of the Secular Coalition of America he conceived and led the "Secular Decade Plan," a specific strategic vision for re-secularizing American government. Faircloth writes about this vision in his book Attack of the Theocrats: How the Religious Right Harms Us All and What To Do About It.

Following the talk, we will hold a meeting to discuss official business.

Reason Rally Bus

For those of you who don't know, the Reason Rally is coming up quickly; it's happening March 24th in Washington DC. If you're wondering how to get there, we have a really great option - the Reason Rally Bus! The bus leaves on Friday, March 23rd from Fort Lauderdale, FL, and returns on Sunday, following the event, on March 25th. Since the event itself is free, all you need to do to go is buy the bus ticket. As the bus leaves immediately following the event, you won't need to pay for a hotel either. If you don't mind sleeping a couple nights on a fairly comfortable bus, it's a really good deal. Plus, it gets you to the Reason Rally without needing to drive yourself or fly.

Now, there is one problem with all this. Right now, the Reason Rally bus still needs to sell 38 seats within the next two weeks in order for us to have it confirmed. If it fails to sell, we'll be out of a ride, and need to find our own way. Personally, without the bus, I probably would not be able to go. So, if you are interested in going to the Reason Rally, and you have not yet made any plans, please consider getting a seat on the bus. I'll make sure to bring as many Little Debbie snacks as I can carry, and I'm sure it'll be a really fun trip for everyone who goes.

Regular Meetup Details

We have our normal social meetups every Wednesday at 7p at the Duffy's on Village Boulevard in West Palm Beach. This is subject to change down the road, but for now, anyone interested in having dinner and some discussion is welcome to join us. Sometimes we reserve the boardroom, sometimes we are outside. The servers can usually find us (ask for FLASH), since we are a fairly large group that comes every week.

Calendar of Events

We now have our calendar posted here. There are several different calendar feeds shown, we have one, there's our meetup feed and the official FLASH calendar feed. We will probably typically be using the meetup calendar for our activities.

West Palm Beach Atheists on Reddit!

We will be using Reddit as our main communication and organization tool - at least for now. If you are interested in contacting us, please go to reddit.westpalmatheists.com (or, if that link doesn't work, the subreddit is r/westpalmatheists), we will be there!

This will be the home for information about the atheist community of the West Palm Beach area of South Florida.

Affiliations of West Palm Beach Atheists

Our organization is a sanctioned, local chapter of FL.A.S.H (Florida Atheists and Secular Humanists), and, as such, is affiliated with American Atheists. We are interested in connecting with other like-minded groups in the area, with the purpose of forming a Coalition of Reason (CoR). With a CoR, we, along with the affiliated groups, would be eligible for funding for things like putting up billboards around West Palm Beach.

This site is built and hosted by the author of the Tiny Robots blog. Another of our members is the author of the blog Planet Shauna.

West Palm Beach Atheists

We are the West Palm Beach Atheists. Since 2009, we have been meeting for dinner and drinks on a weekly basis to discuss our views, to support each other and to generally have a good time.

Currently, we are looking to expand our organization beyond the boundaries of the pub, to get out in the community and start making a difference. We want to let people know that we are here, and that we are generally good and nice people. Our goal is to begin updating this location with information on upcoming events and meetings.
